LAST GASP BASKET GIVES BIG WOOD GOLD


One of the most exciting evenings of City School Sport provided an epic final in the Year 10/11 Boys Basketball Finals at the Wildcats Arena on Monday 6th November.

The evening saw the culmination of the Development and Elite Leagues with the top 4 teams from each league battling it out for the respective league titles.

The Development League finals set off to a thrilling start with the semi final between Nottingham Academy and Farnborough providing an epic game that went from end to end, and the final whistle went the scores were locked at 14 - 14. The game went into 2 minutes overtime and 2 quick baskets from Nottingham Academy looked to have secured a Finals berth, but Farnborough dug deep and returned with 2 late baskets to tie the game at the end of the 2 minutes 18 - 18. Sudden death then followed, and with the momentum behind them Farnborough scored the winning basket to secure their place in the final.

In the corresponding semi final Djanogly showed their team strength to earn their place in the final with a 16 - 2 victory over Bulwell Academy.

The bronze medal play off saw Nottingham Academy pick themselves up after their emotional semi final to take the medals with a 22 - 2 win over Bulwell Academy. In the Development Final Djanogly continued their impressive form to secure the gold medals with a 22 - 8 win over Farnborough.

The Elite League Finals provided the large crowd with a spectacular display of quality basketball and the semi finals saw Trinity overcome Emmanuel 25 - 14 and Big Wood defeat Bluecoat 19 - 15, which only gave a taste of the excitement that was to follow.

In the 3rd / 4th play off Bluecoat and Emmanuel locked horns and went toe to toe throughout the first and second half, trading baskets and on the final whistle the scores were drawn at 15 - 15. The game went into extra time and Bluecoat showed great composure to score 2 baskets to take the bronze medals 19 - 15.

The Elite League final between Big and Trinity delivered the thrilling contest that everyone expected. Big Wood dominated the early stages of the game with Kyle Nott and Ross Finney driving the team forward and mid way through the second half had taken a commanding 16 - 6 lead. Trinity then showed great determination and drive to completely turn the game around and steadily pegged back the score so that going into the final minute the scores were tied at 16- 16. Big Wood then some how composed themselves and a great basket, under tremendous pressure, from Jemel Duggins grasped the lead back and the Big Wood team then hung on to take the gold medals with a thrilling 18 - 6 win.
